The parents of Jesus frantically searched for him for three days until
they found him in the Temple sitting with the teachers. The concern and
anxiety must have been quite strong in the voice of Mary when he
admonished Jesus, “Son, why have you treated us so?” The response of
Jesus was even more puzzling than his conduct when he replied, “Did you
not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
When this incident occurred, Jesus, at the age of 12, was already at
work on his mission of redemption. In spite of his consciousness of
this mission, Jesus went with Mary and Joseph to Nazareth and was
obedient to them. After this incident, there was no mention again of
Jesus in the bible until the start of his public ministry at the
wedding in Cana. There, Jesus again revealed his divine nature by
turning water into wine in response Mary’s concern. Mary told him then,
“They have no wine.” His initial response was just as puzzling, “O
woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” However,
in spite of this statement, Jesus dutifully fulfilled the wish of his
mother. Jesus loved his mother so much that he was ready to change his
schedule in order to honor her.
